Nearly every week I am asked the question, “If I have perfect vision… why would I need to get my eyes checked?” The simple answer is that it is important because vision is not the only thing we look for and evaluate.

Now, although the common phrase, “the eyes are the window to the soul” isnt exactly true.. The eyes are definitely a good indicator of a person’s overall health.

So here are a few reasons why you should get an eye exam:

1. Catch Vision Changes Early

Your vision can change over time without you even realizing it. An eye exam can help detect subtle changes that might not be immediately noticeable, such as difficulty focusing, headaches, or blurry vision. Early detection means early treatment, which can help prevent further deterioration. Sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know.

2. Screen for Ocular Diseases

Many serious eye conditions, like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts, develop gradually and often show no symptoms in their early stages. Regular eye exams can help spot these conditions before they lead to permanent damage, improving the chances for effective treatment.

3. Screen for Systemic Diseases

Eye exams can reveal more than just vision issues. Certain health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, or even types of cancer can show early signs in the eyes. A comprehensive eye exam may provide important clues about your overall health.

4. Update Your Prescription

If you’re wearing glasses or contacts, an eye exam ensures your prescription is up to date. Wearing the wrong prescription can lead to eye strain, headaches, and difficulty seeing clearly. Regular exams help you maintain the best possible vision.

5. Enhance Your Quality of Life

Good vision is essential for everyday activities, from reading and driving to enjoying hobbies and spending time with loved ones. An eye exam helps ensure that you’re seeing clearly and comfortably, which can boost your overall quality of life. I mean, come on… who wouldn’t want to see their best?
